Muscle Scarring
Background
Injuries to the muscle heal by forming a scar. Scar tissue is a thick fibrous tissue that fills in the damaged area. The thicker nature of the scar may irritate surrounding tissue as the associated muscle contracts and relaxes. Depending on the location, scar tissue may cause irritation to nearby muscle, tendons, fascia, or nervous tissue. In some cases, an adhesion may form between the scar and nearby tissues which can limit the range of motion. Over time, remodeling causes scars to become less prominent which often reduces symptoms.
Treatment
Most treatments focus on promoting the remodeling of scar tissue. Various forms of massage can help to stretch and mobilize soft tissue. Kinesiology tape is another option that stretches the underlying tissue.
